Golf Hitting Mats: What to Know Before You Buy
The Critical Factor: Mat Dimensions and Hitting Zone Material
The golf mat is one of the most important items in a golf simulator build. Mat thickness helps with durability but it also can shorten the clearance between the top of your golf clubs and the ceiling. Some golf simulator rooms are short on space, you may not have the highest ceilings or the most amount of width. This is important to notate when purchasing a golf mat, the width of your room can be used to determine if you want a single sided or double sided golf mat. The height of the golf mat is also important, if your golf mat has a taller base then you need to be aware you are hitting from 2" to 3" higher, ensuring you have the ceiling clearance is important!
The hitting zone on your golf mat is important to note. Some hitting zones are larger than others which may affect which launch monitor you want to install. We recommend looking for a golf mat with a replaceable hitting area. Golf Mats are subject to wear and tear under repeated use and repetitive impact, having the flexibility to replace or swap out your hitting zone is cost effective & easier than purchasing a new golf mat.
Why Golf Hitting Mat Quality Affects Your Golf Swing
When you are practicing full golf shots on your golf hitting mat, you may hit one a bit fat which can lead to turf shock. Hitting it fat on natural turf from your local golf course may cause some pain but the forgiveness of the fairway usually takes the brunt of the pain. Golf Turf quite different, it absorbs the impact rather than taking a divot.
It is important to look at the reviews of the golf mat you are looking to purchase, most golfers share their experience with the mat and if it had a negative impact on their swing or if they experienced any form of turf shock. Our SIGPRO Softy Hitting Strip was designed to reduce turf shock and has a special layer of foam built in to increase impact absorption from fat shots!
Hitting Strips vs. Full Mats: Which is Right for Your Simulator?
When shopping for golf mats you will come across options for standalone hitting strips. Both options have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Why you should select a full golf mat: The golf mat will have a 3 major components, the base, the stance section, and the hitting surface. The base of the golf mat may be made out of foam or be a separate heavy duty material (rubber bases are popular). The Stance section is where the golfer will stand when swinging, some golf mats have stance sections for right handed and left handed golfers. The hitting surface is either the same as the stance section (1 piece of turf) or it is a replaceable hitting area (like a hitting strip). Having all of these components rolled into 1 golf mat is great, but you should also be aware of the space constraints of the room / space you are setting up in!
Why you should select a Standalone Hitting Strip: Customers that select a standalone hitting strip normally are in the process of building their own golf simulator flooring. Utilizing gym floor tiles and turf to create a custom flooring experience. They then cut out a section for the hitting strip to be inlaid. The standalone hitting strip approach allows for a more custom and DIY experience over a full golf mat.
