Best Indoor Home Golf Simulators of 2023

If you watch The Golf Channel or ESPN, it's quite likely you've caught a glimpse of a PGA Tour Professional practicing at home on their indoor golf simulator. In fact, Golf Digest recently put out an article featuring Tiger Woods home setup featuring one. If you haven't caught on, let us give you the heads up: golf simulators are "in". What's not to love about them? Golf simulators allow you to practice and play a virtual round of golf on courses 24/7, in the comfort of your home, regardless of what the weather is doing outside.

As the technology matures, the gap between virtual golf and the real thing continues to narrow. Don't get us wrong, an indoor golf simulator will never replace playing a round at your local golf club, but it goes to show how realistic the experience is becoming. With its rise in popularity and a growing home golf market, the number of companies producing simulators has increased. More options means more competition for the manufacturers, but it's also led to a drop in cost for the Average Joe. With so many options, it can be overwhelming deciding which one is right for you. From DIY simulators to pre-built packages, the options are endless. Here at The Indoor Golf Shop our goal is to educate our customers on their options. This guide aims to provide a detailed overview of the best golf simulators available in 2023.

Best Ceiling Mounted Golf Simulator

Uneekor EYE XO SIG12 Golf Simulator

The Uneekor EYE XO is a relative new comer within the North American golf simulator market, but has quickly become a favorite of serious golfers (PGA Tour players included) to improve performance. This overhead mounted unit offers commercial grade ball flight and launch angle data, and for this reason, is our choice as the best golf simulator if you have both lefty and righty golfers playing.

The SIG12 Uneekor EYE XO Package pairs the Uneekor EYE XO, which measures both ball and club data - such as launch angle or angle of attack, with your choice of golf simulation software. Opt for Uneekor’s Refine or Refine+ for golf course play and comprehensive training modes, or choose any 3rd party option such as TGC2019, E6 Connect, or GSPRO.

In addition to the ceiling mounted EYE XO and golf simulator software, the Uneekor EYE XO Package includes the simulator screen, enclosure and projector mount kit.

This simulator setup also includes your choice of our SIGPRO™ Hitting mats. The SIGPRO™ 4x7 and 4x10 hitting mats are realistic and durable making it the perfect mat for your indoor simulator setup. For a more immersive experience be sure to take a look at our SIGPRO™ Golf Simulator Flooring option.

Last but not least, is the projector, the Panasonic VZ580U; hdmi cable also included.

Starting at a cost of $16399, you will be hard pressed to find a more comprehensive simulator package that allows for seamless switching between left handed and right handed golfers, thanks to the simulator being overhead mounted to the ceiling - as opposed to a floor based unit which would require you to pick it up, move it to the other side, and calibrate when switching between different dexterity players.

For this reason, the Uneekor EYE XO SIG12 is our choice as the Best Golf Simulator for both lefty and righty golfers.

Budget Golf Simulator Reviews
Garmin Approach R10 Golf Simulator

I was getting nervous about the R10 based on some of the tests I was seeing, but I have been absolutely thrilled with it. There have already been some firmware updates that have made improvements and helped eliminate some of the early issues people were seeing. I bought the R10 to hit into a net in my garage, and it has been a blast. I feel like I am seeing reasonable shot lengths with every club except driver though some of that may be swing hesitancy on my part. I know I have plenty of room to hit, but I feel like my swing with driver has been more hesitant. I've got 5-6 months coming where no outside golf is possible where I live so I'm really excited about the prospect of still "playing" golf with my R10.

Golf Simulator Buying Guide

What is a Golf Simulator ?

A golf simulator is a tool that allows golfers to practice and play on virtual golf courses or driving ranges, typically in an indoor setting. A complete system includes a launch monitor (think of it as the brain that captures and processes all data related to the ball and/or club), a hitting mat, an impact screen or golf simulator enclosure, gaming computer or iPad, and a projector.

Golfers utilize real golf balls, golf clubs, and take full swings just as they would outdoors. Upon hitting the golf ball the computer processes the ball and/or club data, and your shot is visually displayed directly onto the screen for real time feedback.

Simulators are fairly involved systems and it is very normal to have lots of questions as you begin researching. Below are common questions we hear a lot:

  • How much does a golf simulator cost?

Golf simulators vary in cost with lower end units starting at around $500, to ultra high end models that cost upwards of $100k. In the proceeding sections we've included our recommendations at various price levels.

  • Golf Simulator Ceiling Height ?

We get this one a lot so we've dedicated a section down below, along with a diagram, to address room space & ceiling height requirements.

The Importance of a Golf Simulator

A simulator can be a very effective tool in helping golfers improve their performance. Technology has come a long way in a very short period of time, and as a result these units provide a level of accuracy and realism which mirrors a real world environment. The data provided by a simulator allows golfers to get very prescriptive and make informed decisions regarding their golf game such as swing, shot shape & trajectory, golf club equipment, etc. Some may see a golf simulator as a luxury, but there are very practical reasons why one would own one.

  • Provides accurate data

Most simulators will calculate shot results instantly, providing you with a range of valuable information you can use to practice and make improvements with any club. Data that is reported out can include: clubhead speed, back spin, side spin, carry distance, total distance (carry + roll), flightpath, distance offline, and much more.

  • Allows For Practice 24/7, Day or Night

A simulator is a versatile tool in that it can be setup indoors which means it can be used at anytime, regardless of the time of day or the weather outside - providing an unparalleled golf experience. This is especially useful for those that like to practice after the sun goes down, or those that live in an area with prolonged winters.

  • Bag Mapping Exercise

The technology allows you to perform bag mapping for each of your clubs in a driving range environment. With bag mapping you will know exactly how far you hit each golf club in your bag, and removes any guesswork out on the golf course.

  • Skills Assessments

Several simulators come with skills assessment challenges. These assessments can be used by golfers to fine tune particular parts of your game. For example, SkyTrak offers a game improvement package that includes a wedge matrix feature. The wedge matrix can be used to work on your short game and practice pitches, half shots, 3/4 shots, and full shots with your wedges and other clubs.

  • Full Golf Course Play

Stunning graphics provide a vivid experience and allow you to enjoy playing golf in the comfort of your home with friends and family. Allows you to play on numerous famous courses, and some simulation software even allow you to create and design your own courses. For more information about the different simulation software features & options (including The Golf Club), be sure to visit our Golf Simulator Software Guide.

Types Of Golf Simulators

If you're thinking of buying a simulator, it's important to consider the different types and the technologies they they're built around. There are three main types of golf simulators, each with their own pro's and con's.

Photometric - photometric-based golf simulators, such as the SkyTrak and Foresight Sports GC3, are camera based systems that take high speed images of the ball immediately after impact. The images that are taken are then analyzed to obtain the measurements needed to render shot shape and distance. This type of golf simulator can be used both indoors and outdoors, providing added flexibility. One drawback is that these systems typically do not capture club data such as angle of attack, smash factor, etc. Data captured includes: speed, back spin, side spin, distance off center, and more.

Ball Speed
ball speed measurements for golf simulator

Meaurement of golf ball's velocity after impact. It is the main component in creating distance.
Total Spin
ball spin measurement in golf simulator

Total spin is the amount of spin created around the tilt axis. Spin will determine the shape and lift of the shot.
Distance Off Center
distance from center measurement in golf simulator

The initial angle relative to the target line. Combine with side spin, determines the final position range relative to target.

Camera vs Radar

Radar (Doppler) - This type of golf simulator, such as the Flightscope Mevo Plus, uses doppler radar technology for tracking.

Doppler radar is also used by other industries to track objects, most famously aircraft and weather systems.

In a radar based simulator, a microwave signal is emitted from the unit and bounces back from the golf ball after impact.

Because it needs to be able to see it travel in flight post-impact, these types of simulators operate best outdoors. They can be used indoors as well, but results for tracking are always better outdoors.

Infrared - Infrared (IR) golf simulators, such as the Optishot, emit a light signal to capture the position of the clubhead through the swing.

Since they capture clubhead information to render shot results, it is not required to use a real ball. In our experience, these types of systems are not as reliable tracking as a Photometric or Radar based system.

Golf Simulator Ceiling Height & Space Requirements

One of the most common questions we receive from customers early on in the buying process is "how much space do I need". Space requirements can vary from customer to customer based on their height & swing, as well as equipment used (screen, mat, projector, launch monitor, etc.).

While there's not a one-size-fits-all answer, it is our experience that a typical simulator setup is able to fit into most spaces. You will need a space with minimum dimensions of:

  • 12' Width
  • 18' Depth
  • 9' Height

It's very important to make sure you can swing your club comfortably, as you may need more than 9' high ceilings if your swing requires it. You can always place your setup in a room or space that is larger than the minimum space requirements listed above.
