How to Choose a Golf Launch Monitor

Start with your room. Where the launch monitor sits (behind you, beside the ball or on the ceiling) sets how much depth and height you need. Then choose the data, software and budget that fit how you play.

TypeHow it worksProsBest for
Doppler radarSits behind you and tracks the ball in flight with radar. Examples: Garmin R10, Trackman 4.Portable and battery powered. Reads full ball flight outdoors at the range.Longer rooms, garages and golfers who also practice outdoors
Photometric cameraHigh-speed cameras beside the ball capture it at impact. Examples: Square Golf, Foresight GC3, Bushnell Launch Pro.Measures spin at impact. Sits next to the ball, so you need no extra depth behind you.Home simulators in shorter rooms
Overhead cameraMounts on the ceiling, usually 9 to 10 ft up, and reads ball and club from above. Examples: ProTee VX, Uneekor EYE XR, IDRA II.Nothing on the floor to hit or move. Several let righties and lefties hit from the same spot.Dedicated indoor simulator rooms with enough ceiling height
Radar + camera hybridPairs radar with cameras or imaging. Examples: SkyTrak ST MAX, Rapsodo MLM2PRO, Full Swing KIT, Trackman iO.Radar and camera data together. Depending on model: spin, club data or swing video. One unit for many uses, from budget home nets to premium rooms
All-in-one simulatorA camera launch monitor with its own screen and simulator software. Example: Garmin Approach R50.Plays courses on its 10-inch screen or a projector by HDMI with no phone or PC.Simple plug-and-play setups and the driving range

Questions we hear most

Golf Launch Monitor FAQs

Which launch monitor is best for a home golf simulator?

It depends on your room and budget. In a dedicated room with a 9 to 10 ft ceiling, an overhead unit like the ProTee VX or Trackman iO keeps the floor clear. In a shorter room, a camera unit that sits beside the ball, like the Square Golf Omni or SkyTrak ST MAX, needs no extra depth behind you. If you also practice at the range, pick a portable unit. In 2026 the Square Golf Omni was our best-selling launch monitor, followed by the ProTee VX and the Square Golf Home Edition.

Our best sellers over the past six months were the Square Golf Omni, ProTee VX, Garmin Approach R50 and SkyTrak ST MAX. That covers a floor camera unit, an overhead unit, an all-in-one and a radar and camera hybrid. Not sure which fits? Call our team at 972-848-7491 and we'll check your room with you.

Radar vs camera launch monitor: which is better?

Radar units sit behind you and track the ball in flight, so they read full ball flight outdoors and need extra depth indoors. The Garmin R10 sits 6 to 8 ft behind the tee, and Trackman lists at least 16 ft from the Trackman 4 to the net. Camera (photometric) units capture the ball and club at impact from beside the ball, so they fit shorter rooms.

Many current models use both. The SkyTrak ST MAX pairs a camera with dual Doppler radar, the Rapsodo MLM2PRO pairs radar with two cameras, and the Trackman iO adds high-speed cameras to its radar. If you'll mostly play indoors, let your room depth decide first.

How much does a golf launch monitor cost?

Launch monitors at The Indoor Golf Shop start at $129.99. Budget units like the Rapsodo MLM1, Garmin Approach R10 and Square Golf Home Edition cost the least. Camera units with club data and overhead units like the ProTee VX and Uneekor EYE XR sit in the middle. Premium and tour-level units such as the Trackman iO, Foresight GCQuad and QuadMAX and FlightScope X3C cost the most.

Plan for more than the launch monitor. Many brands charge a yearly software fee, and a full simulator adds an enclosure or screen, hitting mat, projector and often a gaming PC. Our golf simulator packages bundle those parts around the launch monitor you choose.

Do I need a subscription for a launch monitor?

Not always. Square Golf lists no subscription fee and includes 1,000 free credits. FlightScope charges no monthly fee for the Mevo Gen2 or Mevo+. The ProTee VX comes with ProTee Labs and no recurring software fees. You may still pay for third-party course software like GSPro.

Other brands sell yearly plans. A new Trackman includes one year of software, then iO Home is $700/yr. SkyTrak memberships run $99.99 to $599.99/yr. Foresight and Bushnell use Foresight+, with a free tier, Silver at $199/yr and Gold at $599/yr. Garmin Golf membership is $99.99/yr for virtual rounds. Each brand sets its own prices, and they may change.

How much space do I need for a launch monitor?

For a typical simulator we suggest at least 12 ft wide, 18 ft deep and 9 ft high, but your swing and enclosure matter most. Where the launch monitor sits changes the depth you need. Units beside the ball, like Square Golf, the SkyTrak ST MAX and the Garmin R50, need no extra room behind you.

Radar units sit behind you. Rapsodo lists a little more than 14 ft of total depth for the MLM2PRO, and Full Swing lists about 16 to 20 ft for the KIT. Overhead units need height: ProTee recommends a 9 to 10 ft mount, Uneekor a 10 ft mount, and the Trackman iO calibrates for 8'10" to 10'6" from turf to ceiling.

Overhead vs floor launch monitor: which should I get?

An overhead launch monitor mounts on the ceiling, so nothing sits on the floor where it can be hit or bumped. The ProTee VX and TruGolf APOGEE let right- and left-handed golfers hit from the same spot. Overhead units need the right ceiling height and are built for indoor rooms. ProTee and Trackman list the VX and iO as indoor only.

A floor launch monitor sits beside or behind the ball. Most are portable and battery powered, so you can take them to the range, and the lowest-cost options are floor units. Watch our ProTee vs GC3 video below for a side-by-side look at both styles.

Which launch monitors work with GSPro?

Many do. GSPro runs on a Windows PC, and its license is sold separately. Square Golf (free SQG GSPro Connect, in beta), the Garmin R50 over Wi-Fi, the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 and Mevo+, the Full Swing KIT, the ProTee VX through ProTee Labs and the GolfIn IDRA II all list GSPro support.

Some brands require a paid plan first. Rapsodo lists GSPro as an MLM2PRO Premium feature. Uneekor needs a Pro, Champion or Ultimate plan, and Foresight and Bushnell need Foresight+ Gold. Garmin lists E6 Connect, not GSPro, for the R10. If GSPro is a must, ask our team before you buy.

Can I use a launch monitor indoors and outdoors?

Portable units can. The Garmin R10 and R50, SkyTrak ST MAX, FlightScope Mevo Gen2, Full Swing KIT, Rapsodo MLM2PRO, Square Golf Omni and Trackman 4 all list indoor and outdoor use. Keep camera units out of direct sunlight. Ceiling-mounted units like the Trackman iO, ProTee VX and Uneekor EYE XO are made for indoor simulators, and the Square Golf Home Edition is built for indoor rooms.
